Education in England
Until June 2007, Education in England was the responsibility of the Department for Education and Skills at national level and, in the case of publicly funded compulsory education, of Local Education Authorities. In the new UK Government, led by Gordon Brown, responsibility is divided between the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills.
The education structures for Wales and Northern Ireland are broadly similar to the English system, but there are significant differences of emphasis in the depth and breadth of teaching objectives in Scotland. Traditionally the English system emphasises depth of education, whereas the Scottish system emphasises breadth.
